FIRST GRADE Integrated Language Arts Program

Give your child the skills they need to be successful in their first year of school!

1st Grade Reading & Writing featuring Polaris Curriculum:
Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny packetThe Tales of Peter Rabbit and Benjamin Bunny explore the adventures of two mischievous rabbits in these classic tales by Beatrix Potter. Both Peter and Benjamin learn the importance of listening to their parents or paying the consequences. The stories are included in the packet. Stellar Reading Exercises reinforce California State Standards for first grade in SAT 9 style reading comprehension questions, vocabulary, grammar, and include open-ended discussion questions. Star Power Writing Assignments develop fictional, autobiographical, and descriptive writing assignments to master California State Standards for first grade writing. Student samples for Star Power Writing Assignments are included.

1st Grade Phonics & Grammar:

Phonics and Grammar classes include phonics, vocabulary and grammar skill building exercises that are designed to help students build profound decoding, vocabulary and grammar skills by learning phonics rules, challenging vocabulary words and by learning grammar rules & structures step by step. Students' writing skills become more sophisticated by utilizing the phonics, vocabulary and grammar skills learned in this class and applying these skills to their writing.

Math textbooks

1st Grade Math Program
The 1st Grade Math Program features the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project's Everyday Mathematics. The UCSMP's Everyday Mathematics Program is based on the belief that students need to move beyond simple calculation and learn how to utilize higher-level thinking processes while applying math to "real-world" situations. The Math Program features an assessment at the end of each unit and unit report cards that will be sent home after the teacher has evaluated a student's progress in the completed unit. In September, students will begin with Unit 3. Unit topics are described below:

Unit 4 Measurement and Basic Facts
Unit 5 Place Value, Number Stories and Basic Facts
Unit 6 Developing Fact Power
Unit 7 Geometry and Attributes

Unit 10 End-of-Year Reviews and Assessment

1st Grade Reading Lab
Reading Lab at CCA is designed to help students develop better reading habits as well as enhance their love of reading. Through discussing the stories, analyzing the characters and plot, studying vocabulary in context, and doing various activities related to story themes, reading becomes an enjoyable aspect of students' lives.
